The provision for family commitments is one of the new policies laid down in the German law regulating fixed-term contracts for academic staff at higher education institutions (WissZeitVG). It opens up the chance for employees who are on fixed-term contracts without explicitly stated reasons under art. 2 para. 1 WissZeitVG to extend the maximum term by two years per child if the childcare falls in the 12-year or 15-year academic qualifying period(s). The relevant childcare arrangements are deemed to be in place "if the child and carer live in a joint household".
The family policy commitment applies to employment contracts signed pursuant to art. 2 para. 1 WissZeitVG. If both parents are in the academic qualifying period, both can benefit from the family policy commitment.
