Kindergartens and day-care centers

There is a very wide range of childcare services for preschool children in Berlin from the age of 0. Childcare options include day-care centers and nurseries. Unless you intend to take up privately financed day-care provision, you will need the nursery voucher for a childcare place in Berlin which you can apply for at the youth welfare office in the place where you live.

New: You can now also apply for the nursery voucher online. The online form will automatically respond in accordance with the information entered by the applicant (the boxes for parental income will not apply for children over three, for example, as nursery provision is free for preschool children of this age in Berlin).

A short one-page application will be generated automatically after you have filled in the online form. You have to print this out, sign it and send it to your district youth welfare office. You may need to enclose copies of supporting documents with the application (e.g. proof of income).

You can search for nursery places on the internet directory published by the Senate Department (click on "Freie Plätze suchen" (search for places)):

Information on day-care centers:

Please note, that the Family Services Office can only inform you about the procedure of applying for a day care. We do not provide places in any day care center.

Day-care centers of the Berlin Student Union (studierendenWerk Berlin)

The studierendenWerk Berlin runs two day-care centers on and near the TU campus. Students and staff at the Berlin universities can apply for places at the Kita an der TU Berlin Marchstr. 8 (behind the math building) and the Kita an der UdK Berlin und TU Berlin (Sigmunds Hof 17 A - near the Tiergarten S-Bahn station). The demand for places is very high at the moment, especially for children in the 0-3 age group. Click here for information about obtaining a place and the option of going on a waiting list.
